WHAT type of services does a School Social Workers provide?
- School Social Workers are employed by the school district to enhance student learning by providing a vital link with to strengthen the connection between home, school, and the community.
- IN ORDER TO WORK WITHIN THE SCHOOL SETTING, A SCHOOL SOCIAL WORKER MUST HAVE A MASTER'S DEGREE AND HAVE UNIQUE TRAINING TO WORK WITH STUDENTS. THE TRAINING OF A SCHOOL SOCIAL WORKER MAY INCLUDE UNDERSTANDING TRAUMA, UNDERSTANDING CERTIFICATIONS AND SPECIAL EDUCATION LAW, POLICIES AND PROCEDURES, SCHOOL LAW, AND SYSTEMS THEORY.

WHAT DOES A SCHOOL SOCIAL WORKER DO?

SSWs will assist students and their families by identifying and intervening on disruptive factors in the home, community and school environments that may impact a student's educational success.
SSWs often act as a link between the school, the community and the family. SSWs work with the families to develop a positive link between the teachers, school staff and families. SSWs often work with teacher and other school staff to develop an understanding of a student's emotional needs with goal of decreasing risk of struggle with accessing curriculum.
SSWs will also support administrators by reviewing and/or supporting implementation of prevention or intervention programs with a goal to reduce suspensions and absences, including supporting programs that provide positive school climate. Examples of these include but are not limited to: Positive Behavioral Interventions and supports, Bullying prevention program, truancy risk reduction, crisis intervention.
