What is special education?
Special Education programs are developed for those students who have a gap between their abilities and the curriculum. A student is typically referred to the special education team, and then evaluated and must meet eligibility requirements for a Special Education disability in order to have access to special education programs. The eligibility categories include mental impairments, physical impairments, medical impairments and/or emotional impairments.
If a student qualifies for special education services, a individualized education plan (IEP) will be developed by the Special Education Team. The Team will consist of the general education teacher, a special education teacher/provider, an administrator, the parent and the student (depending on the age of the student). Special Education programs and services adapt content, teaching methodology and delivery instruction to meet the appropriate needs of each child. These services are of no cost to the family and are available to children throughout their public education.
